The Kornwerderzand defence line lies like a peninsula between the Wadden Sea and the IJssel Lake. The fishermen from the villages dotted along IJssel Lake used to sail their barges through the lock at Kornwerderzand to the Wadden Sea to fish. This spectacle at the lock was a welcome diversion for the soldiers along the defence line: the fishermen’s bounty didn’t just include fish, but also seals.
