“Hotel Keijzer”
Kornwerderzand is an artificial island. It housed the workers who were building the Afsluitdijk, and it was also used to store equipment. There were houses, sheds, a church, and even a hotel-restaurant. Named after the owner, Hotel Keijzer was a place for soldiers to have a coffee, drink, play billiards, and enjoy themselves. Els Ras, the lockkeeper’s daughter, worked in the hotel. Her memories are recounted by Els’ daughter.
